What are Parabens?

Parabens are a group of chemicals widely used as powerful, artificial preservatives in cosmetic and body care products since the 1920s. Parabens are added to increase the shelf life of products by reducing bacteria and mould.

If the product you are using contains methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and isobutylparaben, it has parabens.

Are Parabens Harmful?

Several scientific studies have found that parabens wreak havoc with our hormones! In both men and women they harm fertility, reproductive organs, affect birth outcomes, and increase the risk of cancer. Parabens mimic estrogen by binding to estrogen receptors on cells. Research has shown that the perceived influx of estrogen beyond normal levels can in some cases trigger reactions such as increasing breast cell division and the growth of tumors. Yes...that means breast cancer.

Now for the good news! What you'll find with natural and organic beauty companies, like Innersense Organic Beauty, is that they have found effective alternatives to parabens that prevent bacteria growing in your products. Its worth noting they will have a shorter shelf life of around 6-12 months, but if you're using a product daily I'm betting it'll be long gone before that time frame!
